On a time crunch? Let’s talk shop… quickly.
Social media can be tedious, long and sometimes overwhelming. But let’s talk about ways to fix that on days when time is money – and you’re short on both! There are 86,400 seconds in a day. If you can spare 300 of them, we’ll be in good shape.
First – using a web client that specifically targets your needs is critical. I prefer to use Mozilla Firefox because of their new improved speed features. Browsing has never been faster, bookmarking has never been simpler, and finding things in a crunch has never been better. Consider it your own “PIA” (Personal Internet Assistant). Firefox has this cool “Awesome Bar” (you may know it as the address bar) that will use your words to find things you’re looking for quickly and easily. Over time, it actually adapts to your preferences to find your favorite websites faster!
Their bookmarking is what will really help you, though. The ability to bookmark on your toolbar will allow you to keep your absolute must-have sites at your finger tips at all times. So finding Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are no more than a single click away. And with Firefox’s super fast speed (an unheard of 1,524 ms!), “web applications like email, photo sites and your favorite social networks will feel snappier and more responsive“, says Firefox. Learn about some of their other great new features here.
So I’ll put some of my favorite social media sites on the bookmark toolbar, giving me instant access to my friends, photos and colleagues. Maybe I’ll add some news sites, webmail and my bank. There. That should round it out. Now I’ll drag them in to order, so I can wake up in the morning, and start clicking!
First, it’s off to ping.fm to update my status on all my social media sites, “Just woke up, feeling good! Starting my morning with 90 seconds of social media mania!” …. it’s better than coffee, trust me. Total Time: 30 Seconds.
On to Facebook, where I’ll check the side bar “Highlights” to comment on my friend’s videos, photo albums and statuses. If you have a Facebook Fan page, make sure to check that for comments, too. Quick and painless. Next! Total Time: 90 Seconds.
Twitter is quick because we’ve already updated our status through Ping. Jump on, check out your Direct Messages and @ replies. Respond back when necessary – otherwise, you may now move on! Total Time: 30 Seconds.
Ready for LinkedIn? Maintain those professional relationships! Sign in and check some of your groups for new discussions. This is the best, and fastest, way to participate. Skim for key words and only comment on discussions that you’re either knowledgeable about, or have comments on. Total Time: 90 Seconds.
You have 60 seconds left, which I’ll often use to check in on my favorite blog site (you may want to check the Internet Marketing Hotline for some new posts!), or as cushion in case I got stuck commenting on those embarrassing middle school pictures that my ex-boyfriend’s sister just posted on her Facebook. Hey, it happens.
Obviously when you have more time to give to social media, it’s a fine idea to spend more time commenting, participating, blogging and interacting. But we all hit those days when it’s just not possible to take an hour from our day, so hopefully this will help you stay connected without spending much time to do so!
